1. Why choose bespoke over ready-to-wear
The áo dài is a close-fitting garment, and every cut must follow the wearer's own measurements. A ready-to-wear áo dài in size S, M or L cannot honour the specific waist, shoulder slope, sleeve length and back line of each individual. Worn off-the-rack, an áo dài will pucker at the waist, fall unevenly at the tails, or sit awkwardly at the collar.
A bespoke áo dài brings three things that a ready-to-wear piece cannot. First, a precise fit tailored to your measurements. Second, thoughtful consultation on fabric and silhouette, suited to your body, complexion and occasion. Third, a longevity that comes from hand-finished seams, carefully treated fabric edges, and textiles chosen with care.
At La Hằng Design, every client is measured directly by a tailor with more than 10 years of experience. We keep your measurement profile on file for future orders.
2. How much bespoke áo dài costs in Hanoi
The price of a bespoke áo dài in Hanoi depends on three main factors: the fabric, the level of hand embellishment, and the complexity of the design.
- Cotton silk or basic chiffon áo dài: 2,000,000 to 4,000,000 VND
- Premium mulberry silk áo dài: 4,000,000 to 8,000,000 VND
- Brocade or velvet áo dài with machine embroidery: 6,000,000 to 12,000,000 VND
- Hand-embroidered wedding áo dài: from 15,000,000 VND
- Áo dài with handcrafted pearl or crystal embellishment: quoted on request
At La Hằng Design, bespoke tailoring begins at 2,000,000 VND. We provide detailed quotes after you have chosen your fabric and design at our showroom at 41 Phùng Hưng, Hoàn Kiếm.
3. How to choose a trusted áo dài atelier in Hanoi
Hanoi has hundreds of tailors, but not all specialise in áo dài. The six criteria below will guide you toward the right choice.
- A physical showroom for fabric sampling and consultation: avoid ateliers that operate online only. You need to feel the fabric in your hands to understand it.
- Specialist áo dài tailors, not Western-garment tailors: áo dài tailoring is a distinct craft, particularly in the collar, the tails, and the waist.
- More than 10 years of experience: this work rests on years of understanding the Vietnamese silhouette.
- A clear client portfolio: photography of completed pieces, client feedback, and a public body of work.
- At least two fittings and adjustments: a trusted atelier will never deliver after a single fitting.
- Post-delivery alterations support: within one to two months, if your measurements shift slightly, the atelier should offer complimentary or discounted alterations.
La Hằng Design meets all six criteria. Our showroom at 41 Phùng Hưng holds more than 200 fabrics, our tailoring team brings 10 to 30+ years of experience, and we honour post-delivery alterations.
4. Common áo dài fabrics and how to choose
Mulberry silk is the finest fabric for áo dài: soft, softly lustrous, breathable, suited to every season. The price is higher, but it is worth the investment for evening wear and wedding áo dài.
Brocade carries a raised woven pattern, ideal for formal occasions and winter. The fabric is denser and holds its structure, but weighs more than silk.
Velvet brings a refined depth, suited to wedding áo dài and mothers of the bride or groom in winter. Requires professional dry cleaning.
Chiffon is light and airy, suited to modern áo dài and summer wear. Affordable and easy to care for.
Cotton silk combines the softness of cotton with the sheen of silk, suited to everyday áo dài or office wear.
A simple rule of thumb: in summer, choose silk, chiffon or cotton silk. In winter and for formal occasions, choose brocade, velvet or heavier silk.
5. What measurements are taken for a bespoke áo dài
If you are unable to visit the showroom in person, La Hằng Design offers measurement consultation via video call. Where possible, we welcome you to our atelier so that our tailors can take measurements directly.
6. Tailoring timelines and booking
- Everyday áo dài (cotton, chiffon, basic silk): 2 to 3 weeks
- Premium áo dài (mulberry silk, brocade): 3 to 4 weeks
- Hand-embroidered wedding áo dài: 6 to 8 weeks
- Áo dài with hand embellishment: 8 to 12 weeks
A principle we follow: always book at least twice the tailoring time before your date, to allow room for fitting and adjustments.
7. Áo dài styles by occasion
Wedding áo dài is traditionally worn in red, gold, or pastel tones, with motifs of phoenix, lotus, or dragon and phoenix. Read more in our guide to the 10 finest wedding áo dài designs for 2026.
Mother of the bride or groom áo dài favours refined tones such as jade, deep violet, and soft beige. See our guide to choosing an áo dài for the mother of the bride or groom.
Evening áo dài can be styled in modern silhouettes with boat necklines, three-quarter sleeves, or paired with a flared skirt.
Tết áo dài favours red, gold, and traditional motifs.
Men's áo dài is typically paired with a khăn đóng (traditional headpiece), in dark brocade, warm brown, or red.
8. How to care for your áo dài
- Silk áo dài: dry clean, or hand wash in cold water with mild detergent, and dry in the shade.
- Brocade and velvet áo dài: professional dry cleaning only.
- Hang on a padded wooden hanger, never on a thin plastic hanger.
- Store in a cotton garment bag, not a plastic cover (which traps humidity).
- Keep away from direct sunlight and humid environments.
- Iron on low heat with a damp cloth placed between the iron and the fabric.
- For hand-embroidered áo dài: never iron directly over the embroidery, always from the reverse.
