Ordering an Áo Dài from Outside Vietnam
Most of the women who write to us from abroad are getting married, and most of them have the same worry: that a garment cut to the millimetre cannot possibly be ordered from eight thousand kilometres away.
It can. We have been doing it for years, and the process below is the one we use. Your measurements are taken on a video call with one of our fitters, not from a chart, and the garment is cut for you in the same Hanoi atelier as everything else we make.
1. Consultation and choosing a design
Tell us the occasion and the date. We send photographs of the designs that suit it, along with fabric options, and we talk it through over messages or a video call, whichever you prefer. If you want to see and feel the cloth before deciding, we courier fabric swatches to you.
2. Measurements
You do not need a tailor where you live. One of our fitters takes you through the measurements on a live video call, watching where the tape sits, which is where home measuring usually goes wrong. If the time difference makes a call difficult, we send a filmed guide and check the numbers before cutting.
3. Deposit
A deposit of 50% confirms the order and starts the work. The balance is due before the finished garment ships.
4. Making and shipping
Making takes three to seven weeks depending on how much hand embroidery the design carries, and shipping is on top of that. We ship worldwide and send tracking when the parcel leaves us. For a wedding, order at least three months ahead; if the design is heavily embroidered, four to six.
What to send us to start
- Your name and a phone number or WhatsApp we can reach you on
- The designs you are drawn to, or a description if nothing on the site is quite right
- Your height and weight, the occasion, and the date you need the garment in your hands
- The city and country you are in, so we can quote shipping

About the atelier
La Hằng Design has been making áo dài at 41 Phùng Hưng in Hanoi's old quarter since 1992, when the atelier was founded by the designer La Hằng. Everything is cut and embroidered by hand, in that building, by people who have been doing it for most of their working lives.
